Bear Can Program
Goal
Bear Awareness Gardiner is happy to offer a free garbage can to every resident in Gardiner. Using bear resistant garbage cans has proven to reduce conflicts with bears and make our community more safe, and our bears less likely to continue to come into town.
Bear Cans are supplied by a cooperative effort between Bear Awareness Gardiner, Montana’s Outdoor Legacy Foundation, Heart of the Rockies Initiative, National Fish and Wildlife Foundation and Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks.
The can will remain to be owned by Bear Awareness Gardiner, but shall be used by the resident/property owner. If the property owner moves from Gardiner, or to a new address within Gardiner, the property owner shall leave the can at the original address, and request a new can, at the new address. This will move toward our goal of having a can at every residence in Gardiner.
For business owners requesting a can for use at their business, we offer a cost share for the total cost of the can. Bear Awareness Gardiner will reduce the cost of a can (64gal $329, 96gal $359), and the business owner will provide the remaining amount.
If you have questions, or are requesting a replacement can, for a broken or worn out can received in the past, please contact Evan Stout directly, at [email protected] or 207-441-7199.
Thank you.
